Imagine having the energy and vitality to have a full and productive day. For those suffering from major depressive disorder or treatment-resistant depression, this can sound impossible. Fortunately, there is still hope for you, even if medication and psychotherapy have not improved your symptoms of depression.
With TMS Therapy in Springfield, you may be able to reduce your symptoms and increase your quality of life. TMS therapy is beneficial for those who suffer from treatment-resistant depression, as it directly targets the regions of the brain associated with depression. Call BiBi Health to learn more about this innovative treatment.
NeuroStar Advanced Therapy (TMS) is an advanced therapy that uses a targeted, pulsed magnetic field, similar to what is used in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine. The pulses, produced through an FDA-cleared device, are delivered directly to the specific area of the brain involved in depression.
The theory behind TMS is that these magnetic pulses reactivate nerve cells that are otherwise inactive to stimulate parts of the brain that allow you to feel connected and excited about life.
While the effectiveness of medication can vary among individuals due to underlying hormonal and metabolic profiles, TMS therapy provides treatment directly to the source of Depression – the brain – and can, therefore, help relieve symptoms of Depression in cases where medication cannot.
TMS Therapy can have a positive impact on your Depression symptoms. In a report prepared by the Harvard Medical School, around 50% of patients who found little relief from antidepressants experienced a meaningful reduction in Depression symptoms after TMS. (Stern AP. (2020). Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS): Hope for stubborn depression. Harvard Health Publishing.)
According to a study of actual patients like the ones living right here in Springfield, 83% receiving NeuroStar Advanced TMS Therapy experienced a meaningful reduction in their Depression symptoms, and over 60% experienced a full remission of symptoms (Sackeim HA, et al. (2020). J Affective Disorders, 277(12):65-74.).
Best of all, TMS Therapy is noninvasive and does not require sedatives or anesthesia. Few side effects have been reported, with the most common being a slight headache or pain at the location of the magnetic coil. Both tend to subside within hours of the procedure.
Bibi Health is proud to offer TMS Therapy at our offices. Our staff is excited to offer this profoundly effective treatment to the community and our patients.

A TMS Therapy treatment session in Springfield is a short outpatient procedure that lasts approximately 20 minutes when performed for Depression treatment. During the treatment, you will relax in a reclining treatment chair that resembles that of a dental chair. A Certified TMS Therapy Specialist, under the care and supervision of the physician, will be with you in the room during your treatment session and can answer any questions you may have. After the treatment, you can immediately return to your normal routine, including driving.
During your consultation visit (your first visit to the Institute), you will meet one-on-one with a TMS Specialist who will answer any questions you may have about TMS. They will share with you exactly what TMS therapy is, how it works to relieve your symptoms, and what to expect during your course of treatment. The TMS Specialist will provide you with an informational packet that includes real patient testimonials and other informational pieces for you to take with you. We can also check your insurance benefits during this time so that you can make a well-informed decision before moving forward with TMS therapy.
During your Physician Initial Evaluation, the physician will conduct a thorough evaluation of your health history, symptoms, and current and past medications. He/she will also discuss whether or not TMS is right for you and the necessary TMS therapy protocol that is best suited for your diagnosis and symptoms.
Many patients come to us because they do not have a Psychiatrist and are being treated for their Depression by their primary care or family physician. Health insurance requires Springfield patients to be evaluated by a Psychiatrist, and the order for TMS therapy must come from a Psychiatrist. Because of this, it is necessary for patients to be properly evaluated to determine if TMS therapy is a viable treatment option.
The mapping session takes place on your first TMS therapy visit. During this time, the physician will map (locate) the area of the brain to be treated and determine your motor threshold (minimal strength or intensity required to invoke stimulation of the targeted neurons). The motor threshold is different for each patient. This area depends on your diagnosis. Many patients are treated for more than one diagnosis or symptom, such as major Depression with severe Anxiety. Under these circumstances, the physician may map two areas of the brain to be treated (the left and right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex). The mapping session may last up to 1 hour. Oftentimes, patients are seen by the Psychiatrist for their initial evaluation and mapped on the same day. When this occurs, patients should plan a visit up to 1-1/2 hours. Mappings are typically conducted on a Saturday or Monday evening; however, we can perform mappings during the week if necessary.
It is important to understand that TMS therapy is not a permanent cure for Depression or the symptoms arising from Depression. While many patients do experience significant improvement or complete remission, it is common for their symptoms to gradually reappear after a period of time. This time differs for each patient, but is typically 6 months to 2 years, depending on the severity of your Depression.
We will make every attempt to follow up with you after the completion of your TMS. We encourage you to call us if your symptoms start to reappear. TMS treatments, along with your antidepressant medication(s), will significantly reduce the severity of any recurring symptoms. Most Springfield psychiatrists will begin to adjust your medications as TMS treatments begin to work. However, most physicians will not completely discontinue all of your medications because it may increase the chance of Depression symptoms returning.
